Policy and planning Strategic Roadmap

Great Barrier Reef values are protected and ecologically sustainable use is enabled through working with Traditional Owners and partners to implement cohesive, risk-based, strategic, efficient and adaptive forward-planning.

GBRMPA
Roadmap developed
This strategic roadmap has been developed to focus the Reef Authority's efforts to deliver a proactive, contemporary and risk-based approach to Marine Park Policy, planning and regulation that will protect key values and enable ecologically sustainable use for a changed and changing Reef.
Assessment of current/future activities
A contemporary level of risk acceptable for activities in the Marine Park is determined so that management resources can be allocated to those areas of highest need.
Permit holders' guide
To improve the end-user experience of the permissions system, educational products are developed to guide current permit holders.
New routine permits
Develop more routine permits for low-risk activities which can be assessed more quickly and efficiently.
Permit condition review
A review to streamline and improve existing standard permit conditions to reduce complexity, ensure consistency and enhance permit compliance.
Recommend risk tolerance
A contemporary risk-based approach to prioritising management efforts will be developed.
Implement recommendations for risk tolerance
Through implementing the agreed risk tolerance, resources are directed to mitigate the highest risks and best protect the values of the Marine Park.
Implement condition review outcomes
Solutions to further streamline permissions, including regulatory review, are implemented.
Legislative amendment repository developed
The Future Legislative Amendment Repository seeks to collate all the identified topics from across the Reef Authority that may benefit from a legislative amendment. The centralised repository will help facilitate ongoing and streamlined reporting and monitoring of the topics to the Executive Management Group from all line areas of the Reef Authority.
